By establishing such rules when everyone first moves in, roommates can feel at ease knowing parties in the home shouldnt get out of hand (and knowing what to do in the event that it does). How should roommates handle noise in the household? Your municipality may have laws pertaining to noise (known as noise ordinances) but creating an agreement between roommates about noise is typically a good idea. For instance, roommates may want to consider when the homes quiet hours start and end (such as 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. on weekdays and 11 p.m. to 8 a.m. on weekends) and what the appropriate volume is for televisions, stereos, computers, or other devices during those hours. Should roommates make rules about the use of personal property? It is recommen ded that roommates make rules regarding whether other members of the household can use another roommates personal property and if roommates should ask permission before each use. Personal property could include items such as Televisions Stereo or gaming systems Computers Kitchen appliances (e.g. blenders, toasters, etc.) Motor vehicles Clothes Books Subscriptions to a service (e.g. Netflix, Spotify, etc.) Keep in mind, whether roommates can use items could depend on where the item is located. For instance, if a television that belongs to one roommate is placed in a shared living room, it can generally be assumed that any individual using that space could use the television. Should r oommates discuss pets in their Roommate Agreement? The Rental Lease created with your landlord should indicate whether pets are permitted on the property. If there is no mention of pets in your Lease Agreement, you may want to ask your landlord for permission before bringing a pet in to the home. If pets are allowed, roommates may find it helpful to discuss how pets will be handled, including Whether pets will be allowed in the home (as roommates can still agree among themselves not to allow pets regardless if the propertys lease allows it) Who will be responsible for looking after the pet Where the pet will sleep Who will pay the expenses related to the pet, such as pet deposits or fees, food, veterinary bills, etc. Should roommates address food in their Roommate Agreement? A Roommate Agreement works best when it is thorough and explores many situations that may come up when people live together. Discussing food and food-related expenses is a good idea in order to clarify Whether roommates will share food expenses (or if each person will be responsible for their own food) Whether certain items (such as condiments, spices, etc.) will be purchased by the household regardless if roommates choose not to share food costs If responsibilities like grocery shopping or cooking will be shared among members of the household How space in the fridge will be divided If food costs are not shared, how roommates will identify which items belong to each resident How should roommates address security in the home? It is important to consider how security will be handled in a shared living situation. Roommates may benefit from discussing specific rules about locking up the home, if anyone outside the home will have an extra key, and where spare keys will be kept, if any. The home may also have a security system. If so, roommates may need to discuss if the cost of the system will be shared equally and when the alarm should be turned on (e.g. at night, when no one is home, etc.). How should roommates divide chores? Roommates can prevent disagreements by discussing chores before everyone moves in, for instance Who will be responsible for which chores? When are chores expected to be completed? Keep in mind that some peoples standards for cleanliness differ from others, so you may also want to discuss everyones expectations for how clean the property will be kept in order to avoid disagreements about cle anliness in the future. What should roommates do about repairs? In a rental property, some repairs are required to be fixed by the landlord, such as Repairs that affect the habitability of the unit (e.g. plumbing or heating issues) Repairs on amentities that are listed in the Lease Agreement (for example, if a Lease Agreement indicates a washer and dryer are included with your unit, the landlord is required to fix it) Other repairs are typically made at the end of the tenancy and are paid for by the landlord or the tenants depending on who caused the damage. If the damage was caused by the tenants or their guests, then the tenants pay the cost of the damage, usually using their security deposit. When it comes to paying for repairs using the security deposit, roommates may want to discuss who will pay for damage that wa s not caused by everyone in the home (like if one roommate made a hole in the drywall). Signing a Roommate AgreementHow do you sign a Roommate Agreement? The only requirement for signing a Roommate Agreement is that all the parties involved use their full, legal name when signing. Signing your agreement in front of a witness is not required but can assist roommates in the event that there is doubt about whether a roommate signed the agreement. Do you need to sign a Roommate Agreement in front of a witness? No, you do not need to sign your Roommate Agreement in front of a witness for it to be a valid agreement. However, signing in front of a witness can help prove that the roommate intended to sign and that the signatures are legitimate. What name should roommates use to sign a Roommate Agreement? Roommates should sign their Roommate Agreement using their full, legal name. Using an individuals full, legal name (as opposed to a nickname) ensures the document can be used in court in case the courts assistance is required to resolve an issue. How do you add a roommate to the household after a Roommate Agreement is signed? To add a new roommate, you should first receive permission from your landlord. Your landlord may decide to update your Residential Lease Agreement to accurately reflect the current situation. And often, when we counter those stressors, we handle them by complaining to anyone willing to listen. But complaining is complicated Sure, it can be a way of expressing frustration and eliciting advice from others. On the flipside, it can be destructive to workplace morale and your reputation. When you complain on a regular basis, those in earshot may question your trustworthiness, assuming that if youre gabbing about some colleagues, youre probably talking behind their backs, as well. Complaining also impacts the office culture as a whole, discouraging collaboration and contributing to the development of office cliques.Plus, while venting may provide temporary emotional relief, studies have shown that complaining doesnt actually make you feel better in the long run. Its an unp roductive vehicle for voicing your concerns that provides an illusion that youre fixing the problem but actually ends up generating even more dorfanger and hostility. So, how can you express your frustrations in a more effective way- one that leads to an actual solution and doesnt tarnish your image? Here are a few alternatives to venting that can help you get to the root of the issue. 1. Take a BreatherWhether it stems from your cubemates pen-tapping habit or a clients tendency to never return your calls, most of us are familiar with the blood-boiling sensation that arises when were annoyed. But when you feel this coming on in the office, recognize it, acknowledge it, and pause before any angry words begin to flow.When it comes to venting, timing is everything. You have to confront issues when the right people and resources are available to actually fix them. This means resisting the urge to go off the moment something upsets you, but instead, to reconsider the situation after youv e had a chance to cool down and gain a bit of perspective.For example, it probably wont play out in your favor to lash out about your colleagues knack for forgetting to make copies of key paperwork minutes before a high-stakes client meeting. Instead, use that energy to write down a list of the issues concerning you, then put time on the calendar to address the topic with that person once the meeting is over and your volatile emotions have passed.2. Make it About Problems, Not PeopleIf youre ultimately looking to resolve your workplace complaints rather than just go on a venting binge (which hopefully is the case), its much more constructive to reference specific behaviors and situations that irk you, rather than make sweeping accusations. For example, rather than saying Steven, youre always so rude to the junior staff, a better approach would be to pinpoint a recent, concrete example, and then frame it in the perspective of how it makes you feel. So, you could say, Steven, when you didnt say hello to the junior staff at the company dinner, I felt disappointed. By focusing on a specific situation, you can work toward a resolution to that issue- rather than simply putting the other person on the defensive with a broad accusation.3. Focus on the Positive Focus on SolutionsA little empathy goes a long way to turn complaints into resolutions, so as difficult as it may be, try making the shift from assuming that others have malicious intent to giving them the benefit of the doubt. For example, if you have a colleague whos surely pounding on her keyboard for the sole purpose of annoying you, try saying, Hey, I know you probably dont realize how loudly you type, but the office echoes and the noise is making it tough for me to concentrate. By phrasing it this way, youre asserting your concerns while softening any unnecessary confrontation. Along the same lines, try framing the situation in a positive light. For example, you might say, Sitting near each other has made it easier to work together on projects, like the email campaign we rocked last month, but a couple of my prospects are complaining that they cant hear me on the phone over the background noise. Most importantly, come prepared with ideas in hand for how to improve the situation or achieve a compromise, such as, Ill start giving you a heads up before I jump on an important call so we can make sure were on the same page. Your colleagues will appreciate that youre willing to help find a solution rather than just point out the problems.Workplace annoyances have always been and always will be a fact of life. Stages You Go Through When Your Co-Worker Quits - The MuseStages You Go Through When Your Co-Worker Quits So you just heard the news Your colleagues leaving. Even if you were expecting this announcement, its easy to get caught up in a roller coaster of emotions during this time. After all, not only could your workload and responsibilities be changing, but you could be losing someone very close to you. In fact, you could even be wondering how youll get through a workday without this person by your side. (The person you talk about so much on the weekends that your friends get jealous.) Such changes arent ever easy, no matter how many times they happen. But take it from someone who just lost her own close work buddy- you can power through this rough patch and come out refreshed and ready to take on new challenges. Hey, it might even work out in your favor. But, before you get to the light at the end of the tunnel, you have to get through the tunnel.Heres what to expectStage 1 Reflection Unless you were privy to your colleagues secret plans, chances are you were caught off-guard by her sudden announcement. You might be asking yourself, Is this really happening? After all, this person has been part of your daily life for a long time. Remember that its perfectly normal to feel this initial shock and to get a little emotional. But also remember that youre not the only one who needs to digest this news. Everyone who works with this person is going through the saatkorn thing you are right now- especially your boss. And, your co-worker may be feeling a bit bittersweet as well dont make her second guess her decision by making this about you. Daily business operations still need to go on, so remember to stay professional and not let yourself spend the the next few days moping.Stage 2 Genuine EnthusiasmOnce you get over your initial shock, youll kick into friend mode. Youre genuinely happy for your colleague- hes worked so hard and deserves this new opportunity You may find yourself organizing some extra lunches or happy hours, or maybe youll take up a collection for a farewell gift. Regardless of how you celebrate, youll be overcome with the feeling that you need to celebrate this persons contributions- your monthly budget be damned.Stage 3 StressSure, youre happy for your colleague, but as soon as the reality tischsets in (and the two-week notice period dwindles down), panic and stress will probably start to set in. In my case, there were so many things that my colleague knew that I didnt after all, hed been with the company for 15 years compared to my two. How was I going to absorb all his tribal knowledge? Being in IT, a lot of people depended on my expertise- how would I ever going to answer all their questions? My time to get any and all of this answered was closing in, and I had to act fast. Which led me toStage 4 Motivation and ActionFaced with all those open questions, worry, and stress, I knew there was only way to help alleviate it Take acti on. My lack of time (again, only two weeks) was a very strong motivator. I immediately jumped into learning and organizing mode. I diligently scheduled knowledge transfer meetings and set specific objectives for each one. I sat and wrote down all those little nagging questions Ive always wondered about, and I made sure I got answers to as many as possible. If youre close, you can go ahead and throw in a few honest ones, too (e.g., Why are you really leaving?). I knew I was never going to learn enough to titelseite every possible situation, but I sure felt better knowing I had asked the tough questions and then documented the responses.Stage 5 ContentmentWhen your colleagues last day arrives, youll likely still have some mixed emotions its never easy saying goodbye to someone close to you. But since you turned your fears into action and came up with a plan, you should be feeling pretty good. You made it through this hectic time, and youre back to feeling happy for the person leaving. Sure, this may mean some extra hours and stress for a while, but it also means you have the chance for new responsibilities. And new responsibilities mean new opportunities for you. When I reflect back on the last six months, I see a lot of logged hours. But I also see that those hours were filled with valuable learning opportunities. If my colleague hadnt left, perhaps my knowledge wouldnt have grown quite as much. As it turned out, I surprised myself by learning, doing, and leading much more than I had in the past- and that is true workplace contentment. Plus, now when I grab drinks with my former co-worker, were not just rehashing the day, but instead actually talking about things that occur outside the schreibstube walls.
