These Are Recruiters Favorite Interview Questions to Ask
These Are Recruiters Favorite Interview Questions to AskThese Are Recruiters Favorite Interview Questions to Ask Dont get me wrong, yes, youre a special candidate who deserves unique consideration for a job. However, the truth is that recruiters and hiring managers have favorite questions they love to ask candidates . There are a handful of questions that are in their arsenals and come out every time they are on the phone with a candidate like yourself. Dont take it personally. Instead, get prepared .We spoke to a group of recruiters and talent acquisition pros who dished on the questions they love to ask all candidates. Take note of what these staffers at Glassdoors 2017 Best Places to Interview will ask in your next one-on-one.Our organization is ever-evolving, so our most successful employees are those who can adapt to change and anticipate trends. With that, my favorite question to ask is, tell me about a time when you were a champion for change or a change ag ent? Stephanie W., HR Projects and Operations Manager at Baylor Scott & WhiteWhat is the one thing that you want me to remember about you? - Recruiters at Academy Sports + OutdoorsTell us about projects youre proud of in a way that gets beyond the short little verbs on your rsum. How did you work through the project? What was the outcome for your team? Your process? The organization? - Recruiters at Gap Inc.If you were hired here, what would keep you engaged in this role and at this company? - Laura Sullivan, Senior Manager of Talent Acquisition at SlalomWhat defines success in this role? How do you determine success after 30, 60, 90 days? - Ashley Cowley, Sr Recruiting freund & Team Lead at Cerner Corporation What sets you apart from other candidates what is it that only you can bring to our team? - James Molledahl, Director of Environmental / Housekeeping Services at SSM HealthTo get at the heart of a candidate, the question I love to ask Can you paint me a picture (or, ano ther variation if you were king/queen for a day) of the role youd leave your current position for? It gives us the insight into how the candidates aim to grow their careers and where they see themselves. For instance, are they moving to leadership roles? Shifting into hands-on technical roles? Are they being exposed to newer technologies? The broad question means I gain a deeper level of understanding on where candidates want to be in their next roles. - Scott Barish, Digital Solutions Recruiting Lead at Booz Allen HamiltonFor people manager roles Tell me about the people youve managed, and where are they now? How have their careers developed, and what impact have you had on their career development? Why we ask this Were looking for leaders who can develop talent as well as lead. We want to hire leaders who have created other leaders, even if that leads to employees outgrowing their positions. - Craig Myers, Director of Talent Acquisition, Cadence Design SystemsThis may surprise y ou but one of my favorite questions to ask is simply, What do you like about your job?. If you want to get someone talking, talk about something they LIKE People inherently find it easy to talk about what they enjoy and this gives me a great insight in to what motivates them in their chosen profession. That question is followed up with What do you dislike about your job and I would reiterate that again that these answers give me a much greater understanding of the candidate. - Heather Evans, Sr Recruiting mann an ihrer seite at Cerner Corporation At the beginning of my interviews, I ask my candidates what they know about our organization. This question tells me if the jobseeker is prepared for the phone interview and it demonstrates their level of interest in our organization. The best answers include information obtained from personal research such as a corporate website, media coverage, and even takeaways from coworkers within the company. These are all easily obtained with a lit tle effort but its a great way to wow your recruiter. - Colleen Flynn, Recruiter at CDWMy favorite question to ask Why did you select health care as a profession? - Jenny Bothun, Registered Nurse at SSM HealthWe are looking for Associates that possess strong problem-solving skills can you give me an example of a time when you had to solve a complex problem and were given little or no information to start? This question allows a candidate to showcase learning agility when it comes to working on a new area. At Cerner, we challenge our Associates to think creatively and be empowered to push boundaries. - Jessica Lamb, Manager & Lead Campus Recruiter at Cerner CorporationFor new grads with limited work experience What 3 adjectives describe you best, and why? Why we ask this There is no right answer to this question. We just want to see how new grads think on their feet and outside their comfort zone. - Craig Myers, Director of Talent Acquisition, Cadence Design SystemsIf you were hi red for this role, what factor(s) would cause you to consider leaving? What is the biggest misperception people have about you? - Recruiters at Academy Sports + Outdoors

Dont Vent About Annoying Co-workersDo This Instead - The Muse
Dont Vent About Annoying Co-workersDo This Instead - The MuseDont Vent About Annoying Co-workers- Do This InsteadIn the daily hustle of the workday, petty annoyances and inconveniences are par for the course. And often, when we counter those stressors, we handle them by complaining to anyone willing to listen. But complaining is complicated Sure, it can be a way of expressing frustration and eliciting advice from others. On the flipside, it can be destructive to workplace morale and your reputation. When you complain on a regular basis, those in earshot may question your trustworthiness, assuming that if youre gabbing about some colleagues, youre probably talking behind their backs, as well. Complaining also impacts the office culture as a whole, discouraging collaboration and contributing to the development of office cliques.Plus, while venting may provide temporary emotional relief, studies have shown that complaining doesnt actually make you feel better in the long run. Its an unp roductive vehicle for voicing your concerns that provides an illusion that youre fixing the problem but actually ends up generating even more dorfanger and hostility. So, how can you express your frustrations in a more effective way- one that leads to an actual solution and doesnt tarnish your image? Here are a few alternatives to venting that can help you get to the root of the issue. 1. Take a BreatherWhether it stems from your cubemates pen-tapping habit or a clients tendency to never return your calls, most of us are familiar with the blood-boiling sensation that arises when were annoyed. But when you feel this coming on in the office, recognize it, acknowledge it, and pause before any angry words begin to flow. When it comes to venting, timing is everything. You have to confront issues when the right people and resources are available to actually fix them. This means resisting the urge to go off the moment something upsets you, but instead, to reconsider the situation after youv e had a chance to cool down and gain a bit of perspective. For example, it probably wont play out in your favor to lash out about your colleagues knack for forgetting to make copies of key paperwork minutes before a high-stakes client meeting. Instead, use that energy to write down a list of the issues concerning you, then put time on the calendar to address the topic with that person once the meeting is over and your volatile emotions have passed.2. Make it About Problems, Not PeopleIf youre ultimately looking to resolve your workplace complaints rather than just go on a venting binge (which hopefully is the case), its much more constructive to reference specific behaviors and situations that irk you, rather than make sweeping accusations. For example, rather than saying Steven, youre always so rude to the junior staff, a better approach would be to pinpoint a recent, concrete example, and then frame it in the perspective of how it makes you feel. So, you could say, Steven, when you didnt say hello to the junior staff at the company dinner, I felt disappointed. By focusing on a specific situation, you can work toward a resolution to that issue- rather than simply putting the other person on the defensive with a broad accusation.3. Focus on the Positive Focus on SolutionsA little empathy goes a long way to turn complaints into resolutions, so as difficult as it may be, try making the shift from assuming that others have malicious intent to giving them the benefit of the doubt. For example, if you have a colleague whos surely pounding on her keyboard for the sole purpose of annoying you, try saying, Hey, I know you probably dont realize how loudly you type, but the office echoes and the noise is making it tough for me to concentrate. By phrasing it this way, youre asserting your concerns while softening any unnecessary confrontation. Along the same lines, try framing the situation in a positive light. For example, you might say, Sitting near each other has made it easier to work together on projects, like the email campaign we rocked last month, but a couple of my prospects are complaining that they cant hear me on the phone over the background noise. Most importantly, come prepared with ideas in hand for how to improve the situation or achieve a compromise, such as, Ill start giving you a heads up before I jump on an important call so we can make sure were on the same page. Your colleagues will appreciate that youre willing to help find a solution rather than just point out the problems.Workplace annoyances have always been and always will be a fact of life. By learning how to address them constructively, youll reduce the anger and contribute to a healthier workplace environment. Photo of angry woman courtesy of Shutterstock.

Stages You Go Through When Your Co-Worker Quits - The Muse
Stages You Go Through When Your Co-Worker Quits - The MuseStages You Go Through When Your Co-Worker Quits So you just heard the news Your colleagues leaving. Even if you were expecting this announcement, its easy to get caught up in a roller coaster of emotions during this time. After all, not only could your workload and responsibilities be changing, but you could be losing someone very close to you. In fact, you could even be wondering how youll get through a workday without this person by your side. (The person you talk about so much on the weekends that your friends get jealous.) Such changes arent ever easy, no matter how many times they happen. But take it from someone who just lost her own close work buddy- you can power through this rough patch and come out refreshed and ready to take on new challenges. Hey, it might even work out in your favor. But, before you get to the light at the end of the tunnel, you have to get through the tunnel.Heres what to expectStage 1 Reflection Unless you were privy to your colleagues secret plans, chances are you were caught off-guard by her sudden announcement. You might be asking yourself, Is this really happening? After all, this person has been part of your daily life for a long time. Remember that its perfectly normal to feel this initial shock and to get a little emotional. But also remember that youre not the only one who needs to digest this news. Everyone who works with this person is going through the saatkorn thing you are right now- especially your boss. And, your co-worker may be feeling a bit bittersweet as well dont make her second guess her decision by making this about you. Daily business operations still need to go on, so remember to stay professional and not let yourself spend the the next few days moping.Stage 2 Genuine EnthusiasmOnce you get over your initial shock, youll kick into friend mode. Youre genuinely happy for your colleague- hes worked so hard and deserves this new opportunity You may find yourself organizing some extra lunches or happy hours, or maybe youll take up a collection for a farewell gift. Regardless of how you celebrate, youll be overcome with the feeling that you need to celebrate this persons contributions- your monthly budget be damned.Stage 3 StressSure, youre happy for your colleague, but as soon as the reality tischsets in (and the two-week notice period dwindles down), panic and stress will probably start to set in. In my case, there were so many things that my colleague knew that I didnt after all, hed been with the company for 15 years compared to my two. How was I going to absorb all his tribal knowledge? Being in IT, a lot of people depended on my expertise- how would I ever going to answer all their questions? My time to get any and all of this answered was closing in, and I had to act fast. Which led me toStage 4 Motivation and ActionFaced with all those open questions, worry, and stress, I knew there was only way to help alleviate it Take acti on. My lack of time (again, only two weeks) was a very strong motivator. I immediately jumped into learning and organizing mode. I diligently scheduled knowledge transfer meetings and set specific objectives for each one. I sat and wrote down all those little nagging questions Ive always wondered about, and I made sure I got answers to as many as possible. If youre close, you can go ahead and throw in a few honest ones, too (e.g., Why are you really leaving?). I knew I was never going to learn enough to titelseite every possible situation, but I sure felt better knowing I had asked the tough questions and then documented the responses.Stage 5 ContentmentWhen your colleagues last day arrives, youll likely still have some mixed emotions its never easy saying goodbye to someone close to you. But since you turned your fears into action and came up with a plan, you should be feeling pretty good. You made it through this hectic time, and youre back to feeling happy for the person leaving. Sure, this may mean some extra hours and stress for a while, but it also means you have the chance for new responsibilities. And new responsibilities mean new opportunities for you. When I reflect back on the last six months, I see a lot of logged hours. But I also see that those hours were filled with valuable learning opportunities. If my colleague hadnt left, perhaps my knowledge wouldnt have grown quite as much. As it turned out, I surprised myself by learning, doing, and leading much more than I had in the past- and that is true workplace contentment. Plus, now when I grab drinks with my former co-worker, were not just rehashing the day, but instead actually talking about things that occur outside the schreibstube walls. What Employers Look for in a Resume
What Employers Look for in a ResumeWhat Employers Look for in a ResumeYou can easily spend hours- or really, days or weeks- laboring over your resume. But will all that hard work result in a resume that matches what employers are looking for? A successful resume doesnt just showcase your work it matches recruiters and hiring managers expectations, clearly conveys that youre a good fit for the role, and above all, is easy to read and understand. What Employers Look for in a Resume Here is a look at some of the things that employers look for in a resume. This insight will help you make sure your resume matches employers expectations and desires. Ease of Reading Your resume should be written in a reasonably sized, legible font, and have normal-sized margins. Dont make hiring managers or potential interviewers wonder if they need a prescription for reading glasses - a too-tiny font is a sign you should cut some copy, or expand your resume onto a second page. Be mindful that your resume is easy to read both on screen and in a printed out hard copy. Scanability While you should labor over choosing the best action words and power verbs for your resume, and ensuring that everything is phrased perfectly, know that few hiring managers are actually reading your resume. Rather, they are speedily scanning the page, looking for keywords, job titles, and major facts that will show if you are a good fit for the position. Make it easy for employers to find this valuable information- include enough white space between lines and in the margins to make it scannable, and also put the focus on the relevant information. Qualifications An employers number one goal is to find a well-qualified candidate. How can you show that youre qualified, and the best possible person for the job? Start by matching your qualifications to the job - if employers are looking for someone who is detail-oriented, make sure your organizational skills and ability to manage lots of projects wi thout mistakes is on display. In the job descriptions on your resume, go beyond listing day-to-day tasks and responsibilities. Think bigger Employers want to know what youll accomplish if youre hired on. Give them a sense of your abilities by putting your achievements - whether its overhauling an inefficient system, saving the company money, or generating sales revenue - on display. And make sure that most relevant accomplishments, the ones that readily translate to the job you want, are most visible. Coherent Story Relevance is important when it comes to resumes - its notlage that employers are lazy, but that its in your best interest to make it as easy as possible for them to understand you as a candidate. Did you switch careers mid-stream? Consider leaving off some of the jobs from your first career, or grouping the job titles together with a very limited description. And, if its been decades since your first job, then its likely time to remove it from your resume. Use your resume to draw as straight a line as possible between your experience and accomplishments, and the job you want. If possible, try to show your career progression, too. Ideally, a resume should show that with each new role, you took on new challenges and increased responsibilities. Formatting Perhaps its a bit old-fashioned, but there is a certain traditional format and style to resumes. If you are going to break the rules, do so knowingly and carefully. Employers are looking to see if you can put together a presentable document. This is true for all jobs, but particularly positions where communications and presentation matter. Keep formatting consistent throughout the document. Hiring managers see a lot of resumes, so they know what should be included, such as contact information, education, etc. Make sure all of the expected information is in place. Avoid These Deal-Breakers Here are some easy ways to make recruiters flip past your resume, or reject it outright Typos Catch ing your own typos is very, very hard. Consider asking a friend or family member to give the document a review.Poor word choices or bragging While you want to tout your accomplishments, and use strong words to describe your responsibilities and achievements, be careful not to tip over the line into bragging. And, dont use the thesaurus so much in an attempt to avoid repetition that you use overly fancy, absurd-sounding words. An unreadable resume Whether because of typos, confusing formatting, or an illegible font, if its hard to read your resume, most likely, recruiters will skip it.

In Defense of the Messy Desk
In Defense of the Messy DeskIn Defense of the Messy DeskEvery day more and more information is thrown at you. New mail, reports from various committees, invoices, proposals, and more all hit your desk several times a day. You are too busy to deal with it right away so it just begins to pile up. Your desktop begins to look like a war zone. The problem here is not that your desk is messy the problem is that important stuff gets lost. It either gets buried by new materie coming in, or its in the new material but is not noticed. As a result, you spend too much time on things that are simply urgent rather than those that are important. When your babo wants to know how soon she can have that report for the Vice President, you dont want to tell her you didnt notice the memo she sent you requesting the report. Nor will your boss be thrilled to hear that the layout for the new product line is late because you set it aside and it got covered up and you forgot about it. Some people will tell yo u the best way to solve this problem is a clean desk. Others say amess is okay. Whos right? Cluttered Desk, Cluttered Mind Not too long ago, there was a popular expression a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind. That expression gave rise to an entire industry designed to help business executives clean their desktops as a sign of their mental acuity. No doubt you have seen movies where the boss sits in his office atop a downtown skyscraper. He sits behind a glass-top desk with no drawers. The only adornments are the impressive pen set for signing important documents and a telephone or intercom so he can give orders. On the Other Hand... Many people see nothing wrong with piles of paper covering the desktop, even spilling onto the chair seats and office floor. They quote adages like a cluttered desk is a sign of genius and a messy desk is only a sign of a messy desk. We all know someone whose desk is that way. You dont see how they can even tell if the desktop is metal or wood. Yet, when you ask them for something, they go right to a pile, leaf through 2 or 3 sheets, and pull out what you asked for. What Works For You Both sides are correct. The issue is not which is correct. The issue is which will make you more effective. There are a few fundamental guidelines that apply to both approaches, but the key is to work in a manner that allows you to be most effective. Almost everyone needs to get rid of some of the clutter atop their desk, but having no more than a single eintrag on your desk at any one time wont work for many of us. Many people are working on several projects at the same time (or almost the same time). Creative types feel the need to have inspiration surrounding them. Detail-oriented individuals need volumes of reference material close at hand. Some people feel the piles of work make them look busy and, thus, keep them safer in times of layoffs. Others feel a clean desk shows how efficient they are at getting the work done. What is important is to do what works for you. How to Tame the Monster Whether you are going for the sterile glass desktop, or simply want to bring a little more order to the chaos of your desktop, there are a few fundamental guidelines Really Want to Improve We dont recommend the severe approach that some do. Unfortunately, that leaves excuses to be too easy on yourself. This attempt to make your desk less cluttered and more efficient depends on you making a serious effort.Keep, Toss, or Move Find three containers. Label the smallest keep. Label the largest toss. Have another container labeled move. The really vital stuff will go into your keep container to be sorted later. Anything that you want to take home or give away goes into the move container. Everything else goes into the toss container. Start With the Oldest You can tell by looking at them which pile is the oldest. Usually, it is farthest from your chair. It will be easiest to throw away items from this pile.Evaluate Each Piece Only Once Look at each item in the pile. Decide which container it will go into. You cant set it back on your desk for later, you have to decide now. Put everything into one of the three containers. There is no other option.Ask Yourself This The first question is do I have this somewhere else, or can I get it from someone? If you have a copy inyour email, or in a report, or on the desk of the part who prepared the market analysis, etc., you dont need to keep another copy. Toss it. Then ask why do I need this? If the answer is a) to take action on it, b) to do something with it when I get more information from someone, or c) to refer to as I do other work, put it into the keep pile. (After you get rid of the clutter you will re-sort your keep pile by those three categories, so feel free to separate them now. It will save time later.) If your answer was anything else, toss that item. Be Ruthless and Brave As you progress through each pile, getting closer and close to the things that just arrived, be ruthless in your decisions. Take no prisoners. If you really dont need it, toss it. And be brave. Dont hang on to something just because someone might ask you something about it someday. Dont build a fortress of paper to protect yourself. Manage the Issue Your desktop doesnt have to be sterile and completely devoid of paper, although it can be if that helps. Your goal is to organize your desktop so that it maximizes your efficiency. If that means a few more piles on your desk than the person next door, that is okay - provided everything you kept helps you meet your goal of increased efficiency.

Zoo Veterinary Technician Career Profile
Zoo Veterinary Technician Career ProfileZoo Veterinary Technician Career ProfileZoo veterinary technicians are specially trained and certified to assist tiergarten veterinarians with exams and procedures. Duties Zoo veterinary technicians assist veterinarians with exams and procedures performed on a wide variety of tiergarten animals. Routine tasks may include assisting with general exams, collecting samples, running diagnostic lab tests, preparing surgical sites, changing bandages, inserting catheters, taking radiographs, administering fluids, filling prescriptions, and giving intravenous or intramuscular injections. Vet techs, including zoo vet techs, may be required to work nights or weekends depending on the schedules of the zoo veterinarians. They must also be aware of the risks inherent in working with exotic animals and must take proper safety precautions to minimize the potential for injury animals who are not fully sedated. Career Options Zoo veterinary technicians p rimarily find employment in zoos, but they may also find jobs at aquariums and research facilities. Veterinary technicians may also transition to other positions in the animal health industry such as veterinary pharmaceutical sales or other veterinary product sales. Education and Licensing There are over 160 accredited veterinary technician programs in the United States that grant two-year training programs. Vet techs must also be licensed in their state of residence. State certification involves passing the National Veterinary Technician (NVT) certification exam, though specific requirements may vary depending on the state. The National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) recognizes 11 specialties for veterinary technician specialist (VTS) certification. The currently recognized specialties for veterinary technicians are anesthesia, surgical, internal medicine, dental, emergency, and critical care, behavior, zoo, equine, clinical practice, clinical patholog y, and nutrition. The Academy of Veterinary Zoological Medicine Technicians (AVZMT) offers VTS specialty certification to vet techs that have completed at least 10,000 hours of work experience in the field of zoological medicine. Additional requirements include the following completion of at least 40 hours of documented continuing education in the field of zoological medicine, a case log consisting of at least 40 cases, five in-depth case reports, and two letters of recommendation from zoo professionals. There are also a variety of skill checklists that must be completed and documented. Veterinary technicians meeting these significant requirements are eligible to take the zoological medicine certification exam that is administered once each year. The location and test date change yearly, so it is advisable to check the AVZMT website for the latest information. Zoos may show a preference for hiring candidates who hold specialty certification in the field of zoological medicine becaus e these individuals have demonstrated significant skill and ability in the field. The Industrys Professional Group Should you choose to enter this field, youll want to join the Association of Zoo Veterinary Technicians (AZVT), which was founded in 1981 and has almost 400 professional members worldwide. The group organizes yearly conferences, publishes quarterly newsletters, educates the public, and provides networking opportunities for its members. Salary According to the U.S. Labor Statistics Bureau, the average salary for a veterinary technician specializing in zoo animals is about$42,000 to $44,030 per year. Benefits for zoo veterinary technicians may include a number of perks in plus-rechnen to basic compensation. Health insurance, dental insurance, paid vacation days, a uniform allowance or discounted admission tickets to the zoo may all be a part of the overall compensation package. Of course, as with any position, salary is commensurate with thelevel of experience and education. Specialists can command the high-end salary in their areas of expertise. Career Outlook According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the profession will expand over the next few years. The limited supply of new techs entering the field combined with the difficulty of achieving zoological medicine specialty certification should translate to very strong job prospects for certified zoo vet techs.

5 Negotiation Tips to Remember for Your Next Job Offer
5 Negotiation Tips to Remember for Your Next Job Offer5 Negotiation Tips to Remember for Your Next Job OfferIt is really exciting to have a job offer on the table. When the job offer includes a pay negotiation it is time to stop and think about these negotiation tips.1. Your salary looks VERY different after taxes and feesThis is so very important to remember when you enter a pay negotiation. Factor in the cost of taxes, direct deposit, and other bank transaction fees. These fees add up. You may be happy with the sound of what you will earn in gross salary, but after everyone takes their cut, what are you really left with?A negotiation tip here is to remember the city you live in, your bank fees, bills, and taxes. You may have a higher cost of living.Do the math for yourself or use a cost of living calculator. Figure out your net income before becoming too impressed with the gross income offer.2. Consider your own needsThink about your personal needs that could require extra money. M edical insurance and commuting all come with a cost. Your pay negotiation will not involve a company proactively taking your needs into consideration. You must let them know.Using a real example, a Senior VP has to relocate to England to work directly with a department.
